Of all the stones to grace the end of a wand, amethyst was one of the most coveted. When combined with a wand that bright purple stone could strengthen nearly any spell a witch or wizard could think of. An intrepid young wizard knew this and proudly harnessed an amethyst wand for his magic, and indeed it made his spell-work more powerful. But alas the wand-wielding wizard let his strength and prowess with magic go to his head and became selfish and cruel. He would use his enhanced power to only serve himself and even curse those who tried to correct his poor behavior.

One day the portentous mage tried to pick a fight with an old hag of a witch who had reprimanded him for his conduct. Confident in his abilities and amethyst wand he lifted it toward her and was about to utter a curse until a smile crept across the hag’s face. Looking down from her smile to his wand he was shocked to see the purple color drain from his amethyst crystal and disappear in front of his eyes.

Even more enraged than before he extended his arm to finish his curse, but nothing happened. He tried another spell, again nothing. He then put his wand away and tried to use his hands for his spell, and yet again nothing happened as the old witch cackled at the boy. Wagging a finger in his direction she jeered at him “Wands have a mind all their own foolish boy, and that one has found you unfit to use magic altogether” then wandered off into the forest.

Now robbed of magic and spellwork altogether, the young man had no choice but to walk back to the nearest town with his head hung low. The very people he had belittled for being weak and poor not a week before now were being approached by him for work and food. It took some time, but the townsfolk grew to accept him and gave him a job guarding the town. As this went on, he grew kinder and more generous with what little he had, helping those in need when he could. Until one day the old witch

waltzed into town.

She called out for the once-great wizard, challenging him to a battle of spells or have the townspeople suffer in his place. Reluctantly, but not wanting to put his friends in danger, the young man stepped out to face the witch. He told her that he had no magic anymore, but she could do whatever she wanted to him so long as she left the town in peace. Once again, a cracked smile spread across her face, and pulling out her wand ordered the ex-wizard to do the same. Hands shaking, he hesitantly pulled out his drained wand and pointed it at the hag, knowing magic was still out of his reach. As he waited for the worst something amazing happened: the violet color of his amethyst wand began to swirl back into his crystal!

He could feel the magic of the wand and his own ability pour back into him, making him feel more like the mage he once was. Purple amethyst wand in hand, he was now ready to duel this witch!

Though that would seem to be unnecessary, as the witch let out a hardy cackle and put her wand away.

Looking into the newly restored wizard's eyes she whispered to him “wands have a mind all their own foolish boy, and you have been found worthy.” With that, she vanished on the spot and left the town intact with a new and more powerful protector. As for the young man? He stayed with the small town using his magic to aid and bless all those he encountered. For power for power's sake is nothing unless it’s used to help and love others.
